March 14th 2012,
In class everyone showed their videos on the projector screen to the class. It was interesting seeing what everyone else came up with for their videos. I must say I was impressed with most of what I saw and so was Jimmy. Most people had minor to make minor fixes with types and titles. There was really only one group that left Jimmy unimpressed but he didn't have much negative feedback to say about the groups so that was relieving. I am definitely looking forward to Monday it's a bittersweet feeling because it's the last day of class. I can def leave this class saying I learned a lot about advertising, I never realized how hard it was and how much thought had to go into it. I have definitely gained a respect for those who choose to do it as a living. It is a field I would consider.

Improvements
March 11th, 2012
In class today, we were able to show Jimmy the progress we made over the weekend. We spent a lot of time last class trying to find a creative visual that would symbolically fit with our concept of growth. Once we chose the visual, we met up on Friday and filmed our ideas. We had a completely new concept from what Jimmy last saw and he seemed to be impressed by our ideas and visuals however, he was unimpressed by our text color choices, the wording and the intro. My partner Dapeng and I sat down together and tried to come up with a catchy beginning that would graspthe viewers attention but at the same time would make sense and fit with the abstract theme of growth throughout the video. Eventually we felt it was best if we scratch the beginning we had, fix the coloring on the wording and make it more direct and relevant. I feel the changes we made improved the video a great deal but it's now only 1:47s so we need to either leave as is or try to add a little more so we can have more time. I posted the most current video in the previous post. Check it out!
Now we can work on our addition piece.

Initial Ideas...
March 8th, 2012
My partner and I had definitely decided to take a literal approach to creating this video. The theme we wanted to portray was growth. But how we wanted to go about showing this idea in a 2 min video was too literal. When we presented our ideas to Jimmy he made us realize that maybe we were being too obvious, he suggested we should first figure out exactly who our audience is and then take a more outside of the box approach. So I feel that's exactly what we did. Suddenly an idea popped into my head and after presenting it to my partner, we both felt that it was an artistic and abstract way to represent our experiences in the design program and get people interested in looking into the program as well. We aren't interviewing students, or showing work we are showing something really cool and metaphorically relating it to the graphic design option here at Cal State La. Here's what we have so far:

Can this be done?
March 5th, 2012
Today you could definitely feel the stress in the air. Everyone was in panic mode about the video and it was evident that no one was confident in believing that we could pull this off in only two weeks and impress Jimmy by a flawless video that was similar to that of the video Kali Nikitas' showed us for Otis' graduate program. Right at the beginning of class we proposed to Jimmy that we should create the video as a class that way it would have better quality and be a more collaborative effort; moreover, we were sure that doing it with only two people was virtually impossible and unachievable. Jimmy kind of explained that we were copping out and that we were over thinking the project. He reassured us that we should focus on one aspectof the program and to stop being so literal and really think about what we wanted to convey. He even stepped out of the room for most of the class period and allowed us to have some much needed discussion about what we liked and disliked about the graphic design/visual communication program at Cal State LA. I must say there seemed to be way more dislikes than likes towards the beginning of the conversation. Many felt dissatisfied with the knowledge and feedback they gained from professors, most were dissatisfied with the poor facilities and unreliable lab equipment, and I can say everyone was annoyed by the fact we only really have two professors that teach in the program. After getting the bad blood out on the table, we began to really reflect on why the program is so great despite all the negative feelings.
Everyone agreed that the self learning and forced independence of student from teacher forced us to grow and learn more rapidly. It also created a more family aspect among students causing our classmates to often be our critics and our teachers. The self learning caused for more self growth and that has been very evident in almost everyones' work. We were really able to talk out our feelings and realize how great the program is after all, although there is a lot of room for improvement it seems to be getting better every year.

Presentation Day!
February 29th, 2012
Well this is it folks, the day has come where we present our final work in hopes of receiving praise and recognition. I must say after the great feedback from last class almost every group made big improvements but since we were never able to get final feedback from Jimmy he wasn't completely satisfied with everyones' final work however he did say he was impressed by our class advertisements as a whole. My partner and I presented and I felt we did a good job the one vital feedback we got was that our body text visually wasn't working. So, when I edit these to put them into my portfolio I will make sure I get that issue resolved. I was really impressed by the various work my classmates created none of us are the same; moreover, everything looked different and unique from one another. I really love the fact that we are all so different when it comes to style and concepts it really allows for growth and perspective. I really enjoyed this project and my partnership we both had strengths and weaknesses however, when we put our ideas and skills together I feel we came up with great final work. After a little fine tuning I think this work will be portfolio ready.
At the end of presentations Jimmy assigned partnerships and also the next assignment. He was actually inspired to try something new for the last project instead of doing what was originally planned. We are to create a 2 minute video promoting the graphic design program at CSULA, and we also have to create a second component that can be our choice that will act as an addition to the video in promoting the program. He suggested a pamphlet, poster, brochure, or something of that nature. This seems like it will be extremely difficult to pull off since we only have two weeks and want to make a phenomenal video. I can definitely feel the stress now. Sigh.
