Well, my partner and I got to school an hour and a half before class started to put our boards together and rushed to class only to find out that Jimmy wasn't attending class today. But hey his absence didn't stop our show, everyone still came on time and ready to get some honest feedback. Surprisingly, with Jimmy being absent we had one of the best critiques to date. I feel like people weren't afraid to voice their opinions or help eachother. Everyone actually spoke up and gave some really good suggestions and opinions on eachothers work. Maybe Jimmy should miss critique days more often ha ha. No but I'm glad we were all able to help eachother, even though it got heated a couple times I feel everyone was being open, honest and respectful of eachothers work. I'm glad my partner and I were able to get the classes opinion before turning in our final advertisements. The stress level has remained pretty low during this particular project and I'm very thankful for that!!

Time to Take a Step in the Right Direction
February 22nd, 2012
Well today initial comps were due. It seems like this time around everything is moving so much faster than the first project but me and my partner had work to show, can't say the same for everyone. It definitely wasn't final work but I'm glad we showed it because after getting the critique we realized we should scratch that idea; moreover we should keep some elements from it but scratch the overall concept. We need to focus more on what we want to communicate and what we want the tone of our add to be. Jimmy was "underwhelmed" by our ad and after really looking at it so was I, I know we can do better and achieve more. This critique has definitely inspired me to go hard or go home. I am not going to be afraid to go above and beyond what I originally planned to create as advertisements. I liked a lot of the ideas my classmates had to show, there are a lot of creative minds in this particular class and I love it. So over the weekend my partner and I plan on getting together, sorting through our ideas, and creating ads and concepts that are worthy of being displayed in actual magazines. I feel a long weekend coming on, but hey this is what I do, I love designing so knowing that I get to stay up all night doing so doesn't bother me one bit. Toodles!

Out of Time
February 20th, 2012
Well I must admit since it was President's Day and we still had school I was really contemplating taking the day off from class but I realized me being absent doesn't just affect me it also affects my partner so I took one for the team and rolled out of bed, not quite on time but hey at least I showed up. Any who, in class we shared our progress with each other and gave feedback to those who needed it. My partner and I didn't get a chance to meet with Jimmy, not really sure why, he just kind of skipped us but it's okay we kind of know what to do at this point. For some reason it seems like this project is zooming by I can't believe initial comps are due next class! But hey I think we are pretty much prepared for whatever Wednesday may bring. I can honestly say I haven't been stressed YET for this project but I'm sure I will be in a few hours. Well, looking forward to seeing the creative works of my classmates and eager to get back feedback and "constructive" criticism from my peers. See ya wednesday!

Gauge Speaker Event (Kali Nikitas)
February 16th, 2012
Kali Nikitas is a very funny and interesting individual. I found her presentation to be much different from any gauge event I have attended thus far. When we first walked into the lecture hall everyone was given three index cards and three envelopes. No one was aware of the purpose of these things but everyone was quite curious. The presentation started a little late because there were issues with the computer apparently but hey that's typical. Once we started Kali instructed us to write global on one envelope, personal on another and professional on the last envelope. Then, she instructed us to write on one side of the card for global what we want to change/ make better globally she told us to basically reach for the stars and have no limits with our wishes and desires. Once we finished our lists of wants we were to draw an image on the back that represented what we said, basically a symbol. We repeated this for each card and once we were done we sealed them. She told us to keep them and one day open them up and see how much of what we asked for actually became a reality. She basically let us know that in life you have to ask for things, put your desires out into the universe and surprisingly we'll find that for the most part they become true. I found this exercise to be very interesting and different, I enjoyed it.
She then took us on a tour of her personal website, showed us some of her works and talked about a the masters program that she started at Otis where she teaches. She explained that just because you study design doesn't necessarily limit you only to design practices. I thought this was an interesting idea. She explained that having the mind of a designer makes you a problem solver and no matter what field you end up in you will find yourself using much of what you learned in design school. Not everyone in her masters program are graphic designers. She stated that she loves to travel because it shapes her mind, she has been many places.
Kali has found that over the years she has become more interested in conversations about what's successful and what isn't when it comes to her work then simply making something that looks nice. In school she wasn't really taught to think, ask question, to be analytical. I found this interesting because it seems like that is being taught here at Cal State La, and though sometimes it can be frustrating it is only going to help us in the end to become better thinkers, better presenters, more confident, and overall better designers. Towards the end of her presentation she showed a part of her website in which I found most interesting was the section in which people would submit photos of themselves and explain where they got each piece they were wearing, if there is an interesting story attached to it they would state it. She had a ton of funny submissions, it was interesting to see. Overall I really enjoyed this presentation because it was unique, entertaining, and informative all at the same time.

40 Sketches =O
February 15th, 2012
Today my partner and I presented our sketches and to my surprise Jimmy didn't hate them all, or make us feel stupid ha ha no but seriously I think we are definitely on to something. We had a ton of great ideas and once we started bouncing ideas back and forth everything became so much clearer. As of now we have two completely different directions we can go in, one is a humorous approach and the other is a more mysterious and intriguing one. But we'll generate more sketches, more headlines and hopefully find a suitable ad. I must say I feel a lot better as far as concept development with this project, I'm starting to have more fun with it.

Pitching Our Ideas
February 13th, 2012
So, for our new project we are to pick an existing product that is poorly marketed and create an ad campaign consisting of 3 full page spreads. As a team, we are to come up with the concepts, choose our demographics, and then choose which magazine we want to run our ads in and why. My partner is Britteny Dillon and I must say we work really well together; moreover, I am glad to have two great partners thus far. Today in class we sat around the table as a class and presented our creative briefs. It was really interesting to see what products of my classmates chose to advertise. The products ranged from 409 cleaner to Hawaiian punch so it's good to see their will be a variety. My partner and I chose to create advertising for Wrangler jeans. We chose Wrangler because they are well known but they aren't the number one selling jeans, and they only target a very specific customer, "the cowboy". We definitely want to break them away from their traditional ads and move them into a younger, hip, and risky kind of image. We want to enhance their overall brand and appeal to a new kind of customer. After looking at their previous ads it was very apparent that the European ads were much more daring and different but the ads made for the a United States were only reaching one type of guy, we definitely want to change that for the better.

Final Presentation: Project One Officially Complete!
February 8th, 2012
Well today has finally come, after weeks of stress, hard work, and brain farts we have finally come to the end. Today we actually had a chance to present our works, our concepts, and reasonings for the decisions that we made as a group in order to reach our end results. I feel that my partner and I had a great presentation and were able to get all of our thoughts, ideas and reasonings out on the table. We only really got one critique on the reasoning behind the font choice of the headline in our pro ad but other than that we didn't get any harsh criticism, our feelings weren't entirely hurt, no heated back and forth arguments and overall I feel really good about it all. I enjoyed working with Anna together we were very strong and were able to come up with successful designs.
Overall the class did great, some better than others but I must say I know for a fact that we all learned a lot about advertisement and all that goes with into it by doing this first project. I really appreciate this project and look forward to a new partner, new assignment, new deadlines and new stress! Yay! (not saying this sarcastically ha ha)

First Presentation!
February 6th, 2011
Today in class we collectively put our boards up as a class, then we critiqued one another's work. I felt like this critique helped us more layout wise as well as concept wise. The most important feedback my partner and I got out of it is that our ads looked too much alike. No one at this point had final work but luckily our final presentations aren't until Wednesday. I must say I do agree with what my peers had to say it is sometimes hard to see the obvious things wrong with your work so getting an outside opinion was much needed. Today after class me and my partner worked together fine tuning the finishing touches on our ads and I must say they came our pretty great! Nervous yet excited about final presentations!
Below is what we presented today:

Progress Report: Let's see how everyone's really doing
Febuary 1st, 2012
Well today was the day in which the entire class got to finally post our progress onto the board, have it looked at by the classed, judged, and ultimately critiqued. This is the day when we figured out if our ideas are golden or if they suck. I was really impressed by some of the work I saw and others not so much. I feel that all of the ideas and concepts were strong, but the execution of some wasn't that great. However, I commend all of my classmates because coming up with the idea is the often tines hardest part, well excpet impressing Jimmy of course =). Jimmy had a lot to say about the ad I created which I found very refreshing and helpful. I kind of like the idea that not everyone got my concept right off the bat because that is what I intended. I wanted it to cause discussion, stir up emotion and get the viewer to really dig deep within themselves to try and understand the message. I also found that if they didn't get the image immediately it would cause the reader to scroll down and read the body copy to make the connection. I find that obvious works can tend to be cheesy and unispiring, moreover; they tend not to have an affect on me.
My partner created the pro ad, and for that ad we basically need to start over and focus on one idea and really capture that idea with the image and the title. It was kind of busy, and there was no sense of hierarchy so after the critique we were able to sit and talk and come up with what we feel is a great solution to the problem. I'm looking forward to making the appropriate changes to make both of our ads successul in every aspect.
